On today’s afternoon trip we were out to find a big game fish and a catch that could also make a great entree for dinner. On this outing we enjoyed the company of our guests from Virginia, Eddie and his lovely wife. We left the dock at Bahia Mar a little before 1 p.m., chatting about past fishing experiences and what our guests wanted to target on their visit to Fort Lauderdale. We decided on rolling the dice this trip – we would go for a big one or go home. Both Hammerhead Shark and Sailfish were mentioned, so we headed straight out to the deeper water. Knowing it was a gamble, we prepared by deploying three Shark baits, one on the water surface, one mid-depth, and another on the bottom. We also mixed in a some surface live baits to add to the action.
It was 4 p.m. and we hadn’t gotten a bite, but we continued as our guests were patient fishermen and I had a feeling we were going to get that good bite. It was just 30 minutes later our faith paid off when we received a Mahi Mahi strike on our live surface bait. As we reeled in the 8 pound Mahi, we celebrated our catch of what many consider the best eating fish in the Atlantic – what a great meal would be on the table tonight! We snapped a few pictures and shared a few high fives, but our adventure was not over.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a big shadow moving behind the boat, just under the large shark bait on the surface. There was little time remaining, but when we hooked what appeared to be large
Hammerhead Shark, I knew this powerful fish would extend the trip. We fought the Shark for what felt like eternity as the sun was approaching the horizon, but after a 45 minute battle, we had the 9 foot 3 inch beast up to the boat for victory pictures – the biggest catch our guests’ had made to date. As I like to say, it’s not over until it’s over, and we ended the trip with another happy group aboard the Good Hit!.
